Kindle devices only work for reading when they are registered to a person and linked to that person’s Amazon account. If you want to donate, gift, or recycle a Kindle, then you will want to deregister your Kindle. Deregistering your Kindle ensures that the next person who gets the device cannot purchase books on your account, see your data, or access your Amazon account. If you plan to get rid of your Kindle device or give it to someone, it is highly important that you deregister it first.
Deregistering a device does not cancel your Amazon account or wipe out your Kindle library. All the books you have ever purchased on Kindle are stored in the cloud and you can pull them down to any device at any time.

What happens when you deregister a Kindle device?
Now that your Kindle is no longer registered the following is true:
- The device can no longer access the Kindle store
- The device can no longer access your Amazon account
- The device can no longer access your Kindle library, or any subscriptions you may have such as Kindle Unlimited
- The device can no longer access your reading progress or reading insights
- The device must be reregistered to an account before anyone can use it to read books.
Note: While your Kindle library is no longer accessible on the deregistered device, the books you have bought are safe in the Amazon cloud. You can access your Kindle books, reading progress, and subscriptions from any Kindle eReader, Fire, or Kindle mobile app that you link to your Amazon account, or by logging into Kindle Cloud PC.
