Did you sign-up for Kindle Unlimited by accident? Amazon has set up its Kindle book detail pages with deceptively labeled buttons which say “Read now for free.” Those buttons link to a place where it’s easy to accidentally enroll in Kindle Unlimited, the $9.99/month unlimited reading program. The button text and placement above the “buy button” almost ensures that a high percentage of people will accidentally sign up for Kindle Unlimited. Usually Amazon is pretty good about putting the customer first. With Kindle Unlimited, we think they have failed.
So how do you cancel your Kindle Unlimited membership? Here are three ways:
Cancel Kindle Unlimited online
- Go to the Your Memberships & Subscriptions (it’s under the Accounts & Lists drop down menu)
- Select Kindle Unlimited
- Click on Manage Your Membership.
- Click on Cancel Kindle Unlimited.
Cancel Kindle Unlimited via chat
Canceling online will not give you a refund. It will just cancel your future payments to the subscription. If you’d like a refund or if your case is complicated you probably want to cancel via chat or email. In that case follow this link to initiate a chat or compose an email.
Cancel Kindle Unlimited via phone
If you are having trouble canceling Kindle Unlimited on Amazon.com and want to cancel over the phone, you can always call the Amazon Kindle Support line at 1-800-321-8851 (United States Number).
When canceling Kindle Unlimited remember these details
When you cancel your Kindle Unlimited subscription your access to the Kindle Unlimited books will remain active until the next billing date. Amazon will not refund for a partial month, unless you specifically ask for it, and even then they might not honor your request.
Once your subscription ends you will no longer be able access to the titles you borrowed with Kindle Unlimited, but Amazon will save all of the bookmarks, notes, and highlights that you created for each book. Should you decide to re-subscribe or purchase the books at a later date, you’ll still have these.
If you cancel a Kindle Unlimited subscription that you pre-paid for, such as is the case with a gift or monthly bundle deal, then you won’t get a partial refund for unused months.
How to get free books without Kindle Unlimited
At any given time Amazon has over 80,000 Kindle books that are free. You can access that free selection here.
If you are an Amazon Prime member, you can access a small percentage of the Kindle Unlimited library with Prime Reading.
