This is a fun review of the publication, Ladies’ Book of Etiquette, and Manual of Politeness, written around a hundred years ago by Florence Hartley. I will take a journey through the book and compare the advice given by Ms. Hartley to modern-day advice. Some ideas are still standing such as treating others as you would like to be treated and respecting others’ opinions. However, other statements show the drastic change from the
Victorian era to the world we live in today, such as the development of information technology, where, for example, we have the ability to book a hotel from anywhere in the world and read its reviews. Take this trip back in time with me and let’s discover the radical change in the behavior and freedom of women.
This is not a typical book review and you don’t have to read the book I’m reviewing in order to enjoy Book about a Book. The subject matter of etiquette of the Victorian era can be quite easily imagined. Book about a Book provides a comparison between modern days and the days of the Victorian era.
